Family Farm Visits in the Barossa ValleyBarossa Marathon Festival

When most people think of the Barossa Valley, they picture sweeping vineyards, cellar doors, and long lunches over a glass of Shiraz. While it is indeed one of Australia’s most celebrated wine regions, the Barossa has another side — one that is warm, down-to-earth, and perfect for families seeking an escape from city life.

Here, the vineyards sit alongside working farms, charming homesteads, and open paddocks dotted with sheep, cows, alpacas, and kangaroos. From feeding friendly farm animals to exploring historic farmhouses and joining seasonal harvest activities, there are plenty of hands-on experiences that blend fun, education, and a touch of Barossa magic.

Whether you are planning a weekend getaway or a longer stay, this guide will take you through the best farms to visit in the Barossa Valley with children — complete with practical tips, activity suggestions, and ideas to help you make the most of your time.

Gully Gardens Barossa

Gully Gardens Barossa is a historic orchard nestled in Angaston. The orchard has been producing stone and pome fruits—like apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, apples, and pears—for over 120 years. Over time, it evolved into a charming farm-shop business, specialising in fresh and traditionally dried fruit.

For families, Gully Gardens offers a relaxed, nature-rich outing. You can stroll through the heritage orchard, explore the connection between food and land, and pick up seasonal treats from the farm shop—like dried fruit, fruit snacks, and chocolate-dipped delights, all made on site.

During the Barossa Vintage Festival (typically held in April), Gully Gardens hosts guided orchard tours—it’s about 1 km of walking on flat paths (so flat shoes and sun protection are recommended), and it’s friendly for both kids and adults

Beerenberg Family Farm

Beerenberg Family Farm in Hahndorf, is a 100% family-owned farm famous for its jams, sauces, and fresh strawberries. Open year-round, it offers a farm shop, café, and seasonal experiences. From November to April, families can enjoy strawberry picking straight from the patch, wander along Strawberry Lane to learn the farm’s history, and sample products—some exclusive to the farm.

Visitors can also relax at the café with scones, gourmet sandwiches, and ice cream, or join special tastings and high-tea experiences. With its mix of hands-on fun, delicious food, and local heritage, Beerenberg makes for a perfect family day in the Adelaide Hills, which is only 45 mins away from Barossa Valley.

Lyndoch Lavender Farm

Lyndoch Lavender Farm is a charming, family-owned working lavender farm. It spans more than four acres of fragrant lavender fields featuring over 70 to 90 different varieties of lavender. Visitors can stroll through the vibrant rows, take in the beautiful natural surroundings, and enjoy sightings of wildlife—including birds like kookaburras, rosellas, and superb blue wrens, as well as reptiles like bearded dragons—making it especially engaging for kids.

The onsite Lavender Kitchen café also offers delicious lavender-inspired treats—like lavender ice cream, scones, biscuits, platters, and more.
